Magical places in Jämtland and Härjedalen – Where myths were born
Share
The mysterious landscapes of Jämtland and Härjedalen have inspired generations of stories. Here, mountains, lakes and forests meet and have become home to creatures such as Näcken, skogsrået and Stállo. This post takes you to some of the most mythical places in the region.
Sonfjället – Guardian of the Forest
Sonfjället, with its high peaks and dense forests, is home to many legends. The forest god is said to watch over its animals and plants.
"I was once hiking through Sonfjället and suddenly heard laughter behind me. When I turned around, I only saw trees," says one hiker.
Storsjön – The Beast and the Seagull
Storsjön is perhaps the region's most famous mythical place. It is said that both Näcken and the famous Storsjö Monster reside here. The lake's depth and mist create a perfect environment for mystery.
"One morning I saw the fog over the water, and I could almost feel the fiddle of the Seagull," says a local fisherman.
Sacred places in forests and mountains
Many caves and rocks in the region are connected to Sami traditions. These places have become part of the wider folk belief, where the vitra and other beings are said to live.
